Caring for the Forest: 1 x 5’ EnglishJune 2014
CARING FOR THE FOREST (BROADCAST ON EURONEWS)
Senior legislators from over 100 countries met in Mexico from June 6th to 8th, 2014 to debate climate legislation and forest management. On the occasion of the 2nd World Summit of Legislators - organised by the Global Legislators Organisation (GLOBE) and hosted by the Mexican Congress - dev.tv and Euronews focus on Mexico’s forest management.
Mexico has one of the highest deforestation rates in the world. It loses about 330,000 acres of forest per year due to illegal logging and conversion of forests to more lucrative land uses, such as agriculture, tourism, mining and urban expansion.
In spite of that, Mexico also showcases some of the best practices of sustainable forest management. It’s the case of Ixtlán de Juárez, in the State of Oaxaca. Here they don’t know what deforestation is. The forest belongs to the whole community, everybody is responsible, and everybody takes care. Land owners, the “comuneros”, managed to create a successful lumber industry through controlled logging and forest conservation. We see how good practices and smart legislation are key to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.
