Mama Hawa
Against the odds, a woman is paving the way for a new future in war-ravaged Somalia. Hawa Aden Mohamed, a former refugee and women’s rights activist, put her own life on the line to better the lives of internally displaced women and girls in a society that has rarely put the rights of women first. Mama Hawa, as she’s called in Galkayo, was selected for the 2012 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award winner for her selfless work.
