Stealing The Past - 1x26’ - English

June 2011

Around the world, theft of art and antiquities has reached epidemic proportions. Some six billion dollars’ worth of stolen heritage is trafficked every year. UNESCO says it may be the third biggest illegal trade after drugs and arms. There’s a 40-year-old UN convention that’s meant to stop the trade and return stolen treasures. But the authorities are struggling. In this programme we go to Italy, Colombia and the UK to look at different aspects of this many-sided crime. And we see what police, museums and auction houses are doing to tackle it.
